Glad you asked 😉
The amount of different accessories you use will be entirely up to you. However, there are certain elements and accessories which you really need to have, in order for you to create an awesome pirate bedroom for your favorite little pirate. It is also very important that you have safety in mind at all times when decorating your kids’ bedroom.
First things first. Before you even start thinking of which accessories to get, I recommend that you first think about the overall look and vibe you’d like to achieve. Will the bedroom have a childlike and cartoonish ambience or will it have a more “grown up” feel? The age of your child will greatly help determine this. If you’re going for the first one, then each and every one of the accessories you choose must preferably have the same style. Same if you’re going for a more “grown up” vibe. The whole bedroom needs to have the same style of accessories in order for it to be cohesive.
Also, how will your child’s bedroom fit in with the existent style of your home decor? Is your current style casual or more formal and classic? These are all things that you need to consider before you start buying accessories.
After you decide the style you’re going for, it’s then time for the fun part to start: choosing your pirate accessories.
I’ve listed a total of 15 different accessories below. But don’t feel pressured to get them all, especially if the room is small. It’s better to have a few striking items placed in strategic areas of the room, then cramming loads of stuff in a tiny space. It would just look like complete chaos.
Some of the items I mention are really a must and will give the room a piratey vibe in an instant. Others are less important but will likely take your decor to a whole new level of awesomeness.

1. Anything with a skull and crossbones motif
Starting with the obvious here. No pirate bedroom is complete without a skull and crossbones. Make sure to mix things up if you’re getting more than one item with a skull and crossbones. Get them in various shapes, sizes and textures. A few ideas on what to get with a skull and crossbones motif are flags, bedding set and rug.
2. Anchor
Use as wall decor or get an anchor table lamp.
3. Pirate Ship
This is probably one of the top items that gets the kids most excited about. If you have a sizeable budget for the bedroom, then you can opt to go for a pirate ship bed. These types of beds are so awesome that it would probably even get a grown up excited let alone a little one. In general though they can be quite pricey. A workaround this is getting someone to make just the ship mast for you and set it up behind your usual bed. With some nice pirate themed bedding, this can still look awesome.
You can also use pirate ship wall decor, cushions or (depending on the age of your child) place a pirate ship model on the desk as a display.
4. Cannons
Although not essential, a toy cannon would make a great addition to the room.
5. Something with an octopus motif
Again this is not absolutely crucial but octopuses do feature heavily in pirate stories and movies. There are plenty of ways you can use octopuses in your decor. Personally, I love a good octopus vinyl wall decal.
6. Set of big pirate skeleton keys
These would especially look good if you’re going for a somewhat “grown up” look.
7. Porthole mirror
This would make an interesting little addition to the room and it’s not your usual skulls and crossbones decoration. It will add variety and enrich the nautical theme.
8. Decorative net
Can be used in various ways to emphasize the nautical theme. Makes for a great way to store some of their stuffed animal toys when hung against the wall.
9. Treasure chest
These come in various shapes and sizes. And they can be made from various materials too. Depending on the size you get, it can be used solely for decorative purposes or as storage for their toys too.
10. Ship wheel
Another lovely addition to a pirate themed bedroom. Can be part of the pirate ship bed if you’re getting one. Would look great next to an anchor wall hanging too.
11. Compass
I love compasses, so I just had to include one on the list. Could be used in various ways. Wall art or a motif on the bedding set or rug to name a few.
12. Treasure map
No pirate is content without a treasure map 🙂 This could be a fun DIY project that you and your child could make. There are plenty of easy to follow tutorials on YouTube on how to make your own pirate treasure map. Alternatively, you could get one on Amazon. They have some gorgeous treasure map tapestries too. Tapestries would look great if you’re going for a “grown up” look.
13. Toy pirate swords
Would look great hung on one of the walls.
14. Antique style world globe
This one would look best if you’re going for a somewhat vintage style, “grown up” ambience.
15. Toy pirate telescope
A great little accessory for the desk.
I hope that this article will help you create a pirate themed bedroom that your little one will love. And don’t forget the 3 S’s! Safety, the style you’re going for and the size of the room you’re decorating.
